Among Kerala's Catholic communities, the Knanaya are distinctive not for their liturgy — they belong to the Syro-Malabar Church — but for a custom that has shaped them for centuries: they marry within the community.
Knanaya tradition traces the community to a group of families who arrived at Kodungallur with Knai Thoma, Thomas of Cana, in the fourth century. Whatever the historical detail, the community has kept a continuous identity since, with its own songs, its own wedding customs and its own sense of descent.
Today Knanaya Catholics are served by the Archeparchy of Kottayam, whose jurisdiction is unusual: it follows the community rather than a territory, so a Knanaya family in Chicago or Dubai still belongs to Kottayam.
Marrying within the community is the practice that has preserved that identity.
