NRI Catholic Marriage: Visas, Timelines and Courtship Across Time Zones

A large share of Kerala Catholic marriages now involve someone living outside India. The faith part does not change. The logistics do, considerably.

Establish the immigration position first

Before anything else, establish precisely what status the person abroad holds, because it governs the timetable for everything that follows.

• Gulf states — a spouse visa usually depends on the sponsor's salary and job category. In the UAE and Qatar it is routine for professionals; in Saudi Arabia it depends heavily on employer and role.
• United Kingdom and Ireland — health and care visas are widely held in the Malayali community and the family route is well understood, but income requirements change and should be checked at the time.
• United States — a green card holder, an H-1B holder and a citizen face very different waits for a spouse. This is the single biggest variable in a US match.
• Canada and Australia — permanent residency timelines set the pace, and couples often plan the wedding around a PR decision.

Leave is the real constraint

The wedding is almost always in Kerala. That means it has to fit inside annual leave — frequently two to four weeks, sometimes fixed months in advance. Work backwards from the leave dates, not forwards from the betrothal.

Courtship across time zones

Most couples in this situation get a handful of in-person meetings before the wedding and months of video calls between them. Some practical advice that families pass on:

• Speak at a regular time rather than whenever both are free. It becomes a habit rather than an effort.
• Let the couple talk without an audience. A conversation with four parents listening is not a conversation.
• Involve both sets of parents in at least one call. Families that have met only through a broker have more to unlearn later.
• Be honest about money early — what is earned, what is sent home, what is owed.

The first year

The spouse who moves gives up a job, a language, a parish and every friend. That is worth naming out loud before the wedding rather than discovering afterwards. Communities in the UAE, the United Kingdom and the United States are large and welcoming, and finding the Malayalam Mass in the first month does more for a new arrival than almost anything else.
