Kerala has four Catholic traditions living side by side: Syro-Malabar, Latin, Syro-Malankara and the Knanaya community within the Syro-Malabar Church. Marriages across them are common, permitted without any special dispensation, and rather less complicated than families fear.
All four are in full communion with Rome. A Syro-Malabar Catholic marrying a Latin Catholic is not entering a mixed marriage in the canonical sense at all. No dispensation is required. What is required is a few decisions taken early rather than late.
Ordinarily the wedding follows the rite of the groom, in his parish, though the couple may choose the bride's instead. Whichever is chosen, the other party's parish priest is involved and gives the necessary permissions. Practically it comes down to where the families are and which church holds the guests.
A wife does not automatically change rite on marriage, though she has the right to transfer to her husband's if she wishes, and many do. Others keep their own for life. Neither is unusual.
By default, children take the father's rite. Parents may choose the mother's instead, with the agreement of both and the proper permission. This is the decision families most often leave unspoken and most often regret leaving unspoken — settle it before the wedding.
None of this is an obstacle. It does mean a couple should attend each other's liturgy a few times before deciding anything, rather than discovering the difference on the first Sunday of married life.
One caveat. The Knanaya community's custom of marrying within itself is strongly held, and a Knanaya person marrying outside the community may lose membership of the Archeparchy of Kottayam. That is a matter for the family and the eparchy, and it should be discussed openly and early.
