Kerala Catholic matrimony by rite
Kerala is the one place where four Catholic traditions live side by side. A marriage between any of them is a marriage between Catholics, and families here usually begin the search inside their own rite.
What the Church asks of a couple
A Catholic wedding in Kerala involves the parish from early on, and families who know what is coming find the months before the wedding far calmer. Requirements differ between dioceses, so treat this as the shape of it rather than a checklist, and speak to your own parish priest first.
Most parishes ask for a recent baptism certificate and a confirmation certificate, a free-status certificate confirming that neither party is already married, and proof that the couple has completed the marriage preparation course. The banns are read so that anyone aware of an impediment can say so. Where the bride and groom belong to different rites or different dioceses, the parishes correspond with each other and the couple normally marries in the rite of the groom unless permission is given otherwise.
None of this is a formality. It is the Church making sure that two people are free to marry, know what they are promising, and have been prepared for it. Starting the conversation with your parish before fixing a date saves a great deal of hurry later.
Commonly asked for
- Baptism certificate, recently issued
- Confirmation certificate
- Free-status or bachelorhood certificate
- Marriage preparation course certificate
- Reading of the banns in both parishes
- Letter between parishes for an inter-rite or inter-diocese marriage
Your diocese decides the details. Ask your parish priest early.

Frequently asked questions
What is Kerala Catholic matrimony?
Kerala Catholic matrimony is partner search among Catholic families of Kerala, across the Syro-Malabar, Latin, Syro-Malankara and Knanaya traditions. On Jesus Choice Matrimonial every profile records its rite, diocese and parish, so families can look within their own community or across the wider Church.
Can a Syro-Malabar Catholic marry a Latin Catholic?
Yes. Both are in full communion with Rome, so a marriage between them is a marriage between Catholics, not a mixed marriage. The couple normally marries in the rite of the groom unless the eparchy or diocese agrees otherwise, and the parish priest guides the paperwork.
What does the Church ask before a Catholic wedding?
Parishes usually ask for a recent baptism certificate, a confirmation certificate, a free-status or bachelorhood certificate from the parish priest, completion of the marriage preparation course, and the reading of banns. Requirements vary by diocese, so ask your own parish early.
Is the marriage preparation course compulsory?
In practice yes. Dioceses in Kerala expect couples to complete a marriage preparation course, often called Pre-Cana, before the wedding is scheduled. Many parishes run them monthly, and the certificate is part of the file.
Can parents create and manage a profile?
Yes. A profile can be managed by a parent, a sibling or a relative, which is how most families here search. The profile records who manages it.
Is registration free?
Yes. Creating a profile and browsing is free. Paid plans unlock contact details, messaging and WhatsApp.
